Project Description
The city utilities of Nur-Sultan required an automated monitoring system to manage manhole maintenance, prevent unauthorized access, and ensure public safety. Winext developed a solution built on the Iotellect IoT Platform that provides real-time equipment monitoring while preventing cover theft and unauthorized openings. This system of advanced sensors and a central cloud platform enables proactive supervision, accurate planning, and efficient management of the city’s manhole infrastructure.
The system automatically detects any unauthorized opening and instantly sends an alert to a central operator, who can then dispatch an emergency response team to the exact location, transforming a reactive process into a proactive one.

Hardware and Environment
Data is transmitted from manhole sensors to the Iotellect cloud platform using energy-efficient LPWAN technologies, including NB-Fi, NB-IoT, and LoRaWAN. The versatile cover sensor also supports connections to external devices, such as water level sensors or CO detectors, allowing for future system expansion.
Benefits
- Curb the theft of manhole covers and other critical infrastructure.
- Drastically shorten incident response time from several days down to just 40 minutes.
- Ensure public safety by constantly monitoring for unauthorized openings.
- Create a comprehensive digital map of all manhole locations for superior asset management.
- Significantly lessen the number of complaints from citizens.
- Enable precise planning, supervision, and execution of manhole maintenance.
Testimonials
“The Smart Manhole project enables real-time control of the utility infrastructure, proper maintenance, and getting notifications on unauthorised hatch openings to take timely measures. This secures citizens against falling into sewer manholes.”
